How much more petrol does a 1600cc engine use compared to a 1300cc?

The only comparison I have was driving a Ford Sierra 1.6 and an Austin Maestro 1.3 a few years back in London and I found there was quite a difference. Is this representative of most cars or are some 1600cc engines more economical?
