What can my family get help with so we can get on our feet?

My husband and I are wanting to move back to California to be with our family. We are in Alabama, young and on our own and have a baby on the way. We don't want to have to live with family so what else could we do? I've looked into this HUD program but there is a waiting list. How long would we be on the waiting list and how exactly does it work? We also know about food stamps, medi-cal, and cash aid but how much would we get? My husband could get into the welfare's job program and I could get help to finish school so we can get on our feet. We are just really needing help, especially since there's a baby on the way, and don't know what else to do. Alabama doesn't have much help for us and we hate it here.
